Family Law: 5 tips for going to Court

Going to Court can be scary. Not only are decisions going to be made about your life, but Court itself is a strange place to most people.

Here are 5 tips for those expecting to go to Court which we hope will make things a little bit easier:

  1. Be early: It’s not uncommon for the Court lists to be running late, but it is also not unheard of that they are running ahead of schedule either. In either situation, don’t risk being late to your court appointment.
  2. Dress appropriately: The dress code for Court is the same as in a formal work or office situation. Also be aware that the Court rooms are air conditioned and can get quite cool.
  3. Go where directed: Some Court rooms are closed to the public, some rooms are private meeting rooms and some are just other rooms in the Courthouse used for administrative purposes. If you are unsure of where to go, ask a Court officer or someone at the help desk. You don’t want to walk into a private meeting!
  4. Be aware of security: Before you enter the Courthouse, you will be expected to go through security screening. If you have any sharp or dangerous objects in your pockets or handbag (e.g. scissors), you will be asked to remove them.
  5. Be respectful: Many of the customs at the Court are about being respectful. Bowing to the Coat of Arms when entering and exiting the Court room, being respectful to the Judge, Magistrate or Registrar and being silent when you have not been asked to speak are expected civilities in Court.
