Choosing the right lawyer may seem as simple as typing ‘cheap legal advice’ or ‘family law lawyers NSW’ into Google. If you are looking for a lawyer, it’s likely that you are searching for someone who communicates well and is competent, discreet, and trustworthy. Unfortunately, these characteristics are almost impossible to Google. As a result, you as a client should use your first meeting with your lawyer as an opportunity to learn as much about them as they learn about you.
So, what are you actually looking for in a lawyer?
- Communication is key
- Does the lawyer communicate with you in a language and manner, which you can understand? It’s important that the lawyer can explain the potential problems of your situation and ways to resolve them in a clear and simple manner. We know the law is confusing - it takes more than half a decade to be a qualified practitioner. So, choose a lawyer who can equip you with the knowledge you need through clear communication.
- Knows their area of law
- Law is a broad profession. Different areas of the law have different complexities; you cannot apply corporate law principles to family law and vice versa. As a result, it is important that your lawyer has knowledge and experience in Family Law in NSW, particularly in the area of family law that applies to your situation whether that be a family law property settlement, a parenting dispute or both.
- Confidentiality is a given
- Lawyers are legally obliged maintain your confidence and, as such, being discreet should be a given for any law firm. However, some lawyers fulfil this particular obligation better than others and it’s important that you still keep this in mind. Choose a lawyer who is aware of your needs and interests beyond their legal obligation of confidentiality.
- Do you trust them?
- At the end of your first meeting, it is important that you believe you can trust your lawyer because they will be representing you. You should be able to trust that they will do their job well and have your best interests in the forefront of their mind.
