If you have decided to visit a lawyer, you may be wondering what to expect when you get to the law firm. In family law, it is usual practice for the family lawyer to organise a first conference with their clients to discuss their situation and to out what the client is looking for. There are ways to prepare for your first conference (and we've even got a helpful guide for that!) but attending a law firm is not a test that you have to study for. These few simple tips will make attending a law firm for the first time a much more relaxing experience and answer those questions you may be too nervous to ask.
What to wear?
Going to a law firm is not like a job interview; you do not need to dress up for it. Comfortable clothing is key. However, note that everyone else at the law firm will be dressed in business attire, so smart casual is a safe dress code if you want to feel comfortable in that middle ground. Truth be told, one of the reason lawyers are so frequently dressed up is the air conditioning in the office is always on! So, be prepared for something a little chilly and even if it’s the middle of summer, stay on the safe side and bring a jacket.
Did you eat?
If you are attending a law firm for that first conference, it is likely going to be long meeting. Usually, a first conference will take just over an hour but it can feel much longer if it’s past lunch time and you haven't eaten. Considering first conferences in Family Law meetings are often difficult enough, grab a bite to eat before coming so your are as comfortable as possible.

Confirm your meeting
Finally, both you and your lawyer lead a busy life. Confirm the time and place of your meeting ahead to avoid an administrative mishap and ensure both you and your lawyer get the most out of your meeting. A meeting is a time in amongst your lawyer's busy schedule where he or she is entirely focused on your matter and your needs. If you have a question though feel free to call the law firm before you visit and they will be more than happy to help with your enquiries. After all, they do want you as a client!
